Gharshan: Lives of Quarry workers

About

This exhibition effectively conveys the essence of the difficult conditions faced by those who labor in quarries. The word “Gharshan” in Marathi means struggle. It adds significant depth and understanding to the background of the workers. The title is more poignant and relatable to local audience reflecting the worker’s authentic experience. Gharshan implies a constant rubbing or resistance. Its physical wear from handling heavy tools and materials to emotional and mental wear and tear. Its Gharshan from enduring Harsh working conditions and limited economic returns. The term highlights the clash between the workers dreams for a better life and the harsh realities they face daily. It represents the conflict between what they hope to achieve and what their circumstance allow. The “Gharshan between their bodies and unyielding stone underscores the toll of their labour-intensive work. At the same time, it signifies the relentless nature of their existence.

The exhibition has travelled to various cities and has achieved acclaim support and acknowledgement from fraternity of built environment and Artists alike.
